Farmers Taking a Stand
A new campaign launched by the pioneering organic veg box company Riverford is aimed at raising awareness and exposing the supermarkets monopolistic attitudes to farmers.
What is Farmwashing?
Supermarkets are decking their aisles out with British flags to make us think everything is locally sourced, they’re fabricating farm names to put on the packaging to make you think it’s from a small caring family farm, the reality is that it’s misdirection to hide the fact that it’s imported or grown by industrial farms. Supermarkets are free to use the word ‘farm’ on their packaging despite it not actually coming from one.
Meanwhile the actual family farms, who are often the leaders in quality, innovation and welfare, are being driven to the wall by the supermarkets monopolistic approach to their suppliers.

What We Can Do
The stopfarmwashing.co.uk website has two core pieces of advice:
Read the labels
Dig deeper. Look carefully at the labels next time you’re shopping. Where was your food really grown? Are any animal welfare claims backed up by organic or free-range certification? Is it being sold under a fake farm brand?
Buy direct from farmers
Shop differently. If you’re able to, spend your money at local shops rather than supermarkets – or even better, buy directly from farmers. The Farm Retail Association is a great resource for finding farm shops and farmers markets in your area.
